Technique Clinic

For Adult Beginners, Returning Pianists & Teachers

Thursday 15th February 2023 (18:30 – 20:00 GMT)

Are you busy working through Penelope’s new course, Foundations in Piano Technique? Do you have any questions or need some insights and guidance in applying the concepts to your playing? Or are you an adult beginner or returning pianist looking for assistance with trouble spots in your technique?

Join us online on Thursday 15th February for a technique clinic in which Penelope answers questions submitted in advance from course participants and beginner pianists. In this interactive session, you will be able to:

  • Ask questions and obtain assistance in putting the concepts and techniques from the course into practice
  • Work with Penelope to get help with trouble spots arising from the exercises and repertoire examples
  • Learn how to apply Penelope’s approach in depth to practical examples
  • Observe Penelope in action and gain insights into how to solve technical problems for yourself or students

The format

This 90-minute workshop will take a practical, interactive format in which Penelope will respond to questions submitted in advance (a form for question submission will be provided upon sign-up). Participants will have the opportunity to work with Penelope online and the option to send us a video recording outlining your question or demonstrating anything you would like Penelope to address during the session.

Although anyone can sign-up for this event, questions from course participants will be prioritised. Recordings will also be made available to all in-person and online ticketholders after the event.

Ticket options & prices

If you missed this event you can still purchase access to watch the recordings here (tickets cost £40 or £24 for Online Academy subscribers).

Frequently asked questions

  • How does online participation work? All participants will have the opportunity to send questions through in advance of the session. You will also have the option to work directly with Penelope over Zoom during the session if you wish to.
  • What do I need in terms of set-up to participate online? If you would like to work with Penelope online then you will need to be at your piano with your camera and microphone set-up. You will need to ensure that your Zoom settings are suitable for music making (we will provide further instructions on this) and we do recommend using a cable connection (rather than wifi) if at all possible.
  • What level is this workshop suitable for? This workshop is suitable for pianists of all levels and piano teachers, but is primarily aimed at beginner and returning pianists.
  • Is any preparation required? No, however if you would like to get help from Penelope during this session then you will have the opportunity to submit questions in advance.
  • I want to join in person – do I have to play? This is entirely voluntary and you will not be expected to work with Penelope unless you want to!
  • I would love to participate but I’m nervous about playing in front of others! Working with Penelope during this session is entirely optional therefore you do not need to play unless you wish to. The focus of this event is problem solving and testing your knowledge or proficiency as a pianist. Furthermore, most players attending a piano course will feel nervous playing in front of the group and Penelope’s approach is to recognise and respect this, creating a safe and non-judgmental space for everyone.
