First Videos for ABRSM Piano Syllabus Published!

By Informance, 2022-09-08 Posted in: Examinations, Learning Pieces

The first videos in our collection of resources for the 2023 & 2024 ABRSM piano examination syllabus are now available on the Online Academy! These initial videos feature walk-throughs for works from the elementary grades (Initial – Grade 3) and offer practice suggestions, tips on style and interpretation and many other ideas.

New Video Features

This collection of videos have been shot in our new studio using multiple cameras and microphones, giving the best view of the points illustrated and an optimal balance between speaking and playing. Many of the videos will have accompanying score excerpts and links to further resources e.g. recordings, purchase options and open domain downloads will be listed where available.

Example Video – “Patterns”

Heinrich Wohlfahrt’s Patterns (No. 10 from Kinder-Klavierschule) from the Initial Grade A list, is a beginner’s piece in a five-finger position throughout, making it easy from the perspective of reading and position shifts and yet challenging – as part of a foundation for skillful piano playing we must not fall into the trap of fixing the hand and playing from the fingers.

This piece, along with several others in the elementary grades, can also be used advanced players for a variety of other purposes, as Graham Fitch demonstrates in this video. Click here or on the image below to watch the full video on the Online Academy (no subscription required!).

  • Grade 2 – Trad. Chinese (arr. Yip): Kangding Love Song

Click here to view the full index of a of available videos, including links to several from previous and other syllabuses (further information on our project for the previous 2021 & 2022 syllabus is available here).

Videos for almost 60 pieces have been recorded already and are currently in the various stages of the editing process. Several further shoots are planned and we will be releasing the videos in frequent installments over the coming months.
