Great Pianists Interviewed

By Graham Fitch, 2016-01-07 Posted in: General

One of my favourite books of interviews is Great Pianists Speak with Adele Marcus. It is full of insight into the pianist’s art, and Ms. Marcus’ questions are always very astute. Along with Pianists at Play by Dean Elder, I turn to  Abram Chasins’ Speaking of Pianists for inspiration.

How wonderful to find these clips on YouTube, conversations and interviews with famous pianists as well as some interesting documentaries. I hope you enjoy them!

The other day I was practising Chopin's 3rd Scherzo, a piece I have played regularly over the years. Because I haven't touched it in a while, I found it needed a bit of dusting off and some cobwebs removing before I could get it back into shape and find the…

Hold Me, I’m a Fermata!

Following on from last week's post on rests, I'm going to move on to the fermata - or the pause. We find this marked on rests as well as on notes, and also on bar lines. What is a fermata, and how long do we hold it for? Grove's Dictionary…

Here is the second of my series of summer holiday posts, this week on piano-related humour - because we all need a bit of light relief from time to time. Victor Borge I once saw Victor Borge at the Royal Albert Hall in London, and (like the rest of the audience)…
