Ideas, Inspiration & Tips for Your Piano Playing

By Informance, 2023-03-02 Posted in: Events

We’re delighted to have had the opportunity to collaborate with The Piano Teachers’ Course UK on several projects to date, including creating a collection of modules for the teaching section of the Online Academy. Our latest combined initiative is a new series of online workshops called PTC Live.

These workshops are presented by PTC tutors and aim to give piano players and teachers new ideas, inspiration and tips. Each session is recorded so you can revisit or watch the recordings in your own time. Questions for the tutors on the topics presented are also most welcome and discounts are available for Online Academy subscribers and PTC alumni!

Psychology, ABRSM Repertoire & Technique for Musical Freedom

The first event took place on 4th December 2022 and featured Lucinda Mackworth-Young, Jill Morton and Masayuki Tayama giving presentations on teaching psychology, the new ABRSM syllabus and laying good technical foundations.

In this excerpt from the workshop recordings, Masa shows how to create a big sound without tension, Lucinda gives some ideas for introducing improvisation into a lesson and Jill explores a narrative for the Vals Poetico by Granados:

Pedalling, Classical Style and Exploring Sound & Colour

The second set of workshops took place on Sunday 29th January 2023 with Kris Worsley and Jill Morton discussing pedalling, classical style and sound and colour possibilities in 20th C repertoire.

In this excerpt from the workshop recordings, Kris gives an interesting example of how Mozart embellished a passage in one of his concertos and demonstrates partial pedalling in another work. Jill then explores the subject of voicing and creating the desired sound and colour in a prelude by Debussy:

Snakes And Ladders

In life, we repeat certain ways of doing things until they become habits - until we become unconscious of them and do them without thinking (and without the need to think about them). It is said that good habits are hard to form and yet easy to break, while bad…

More Thoughts on Slow Practising

By Graham Fitch, 2011-12-16

I am convinced it is not possible to say too much about slow practising or to overemphasise its importance. Here are one or two random thoughts on the subject, which supplement what I have previously written. Slow practising basically expands the time distance between one note and the next, allowing…

There are many reasons for tension at the keyboard. Faulty training is an obvious one, inefficient use of the body another. Yet tension does not always have its origins in the body - if you had teachers who made you feel incompetent and useless because they focussed only on the…
