Piano Conversations with William Westney

By Graham Fitch, 2021-02-11 Posted in: Piano Conversations, Practising

This week’s blog post features a video conversation between pianist, pedagogue and author William Westney and myself.

I first met William at a conference, and I knew from the time we spent together over dinner that there were just so many things we had to talk about. Therefore I couldn’t be more pleased when he agreed to come on board as a contributor to the Online Academy. It’s absolutely fantastic for us to have someone with his insight and experience on our team.

In this video, we discuss our shared experience with Dalcroze, our desire to empower our students, and the various ways we have each found to achieve this. However, we barely scratched the surface in this conversation, therefore I look forward to many future #keyboardconversations about these topics and more!

Practising for Long-Term Results

William recently made his debut as a contributor to the Online Academy with a two-part video lecture on revisiting warm-ups. These videos offer a simple, effortless process that takes only a few minutes to ensure successful daily practice.

We’ve just published his next video which in which he demonstrates a remarkably easy technique for mind and body to truly “digest” (and remember) what we’ve practised. Click here to view on the Online Academy.

I have noticed a lot of players seem to think that, once they have learned a piece they should be able to play it from then on in, whenever they desire. If only we could do some work on a piece, put the genie in the bottle and uncork it…
