Chopin, Handel & Siloti

By Informance, 2024-07-25 Posted in: Practising

Our last Practice Clinic before the summer break features answers to questions on a mazurka and nocturne by Chopin, ornaments in a Handel suite and mastering the jumps in Siloti’s beautiful arrangement of Glück’s Melody from Orfeo ed Euridice!

Chopin Mazurka in A Minor

Practice clinic questions

Chopin Mazurka in A Minor, Op. 68 No. 2 – I am preparing this piece for my ABRSM Grade 7 exam and although I can play it by memory and have learnt it well using deep learning techniques, it often falls apart when I play it for others. Having analysed the piece, I am very familiar with almost every note and understand how it’s constructed etc. Have you any pointers as to how I can address this issue?

Handel Suite in E Major, HWV 430 – How does one play the ornaments in the first movement of this suite? Are trills always started from the note above? And can you perhaps recommend an edition?

Chopin Nocturne in C-sharp Minor, Op Posth – I’m really struggling to play bar 58. I’ve heard that in Chopin’s music, the LH needs to stay strictly in time while the RH plays freely, but my fingers won’t move as fast as they need to. Any suggestions please?

Glück Melody from “Orfeo ed Euridice” (Arr. A. Siloti) – A while ago on your blog you recommended the Siloti transcription of this piece which I love! However, I find the LH a bit of a struggle in general. It’s sluggish and lumpy, and I don’t always feel confident with the jumps. I’m hoping you might have a couple of practice tips to help me master these jumps?
