The Practice Sleuths Episode #6

By Informance, 2026-05-21 Posted in: Learning Pieces, Practising

Creativity in Practice

Graham Fitch and Adina Mornell return with a new episode of The Practice Sleuths to tackle a question that every pianist faces: how can we bring creativity into our practice and avoid going on autopilot?

Using a range of musical examples, they explore how imagination, experimentation and curiosity shape the way we practise, from avoiding mechanical repetition through to developing a more personal, expressive approach to music.

This episode is packed with ideas on how to make practice more engaging and effective, showing that real progress comes from a creative and exploratory approach to the process.

Do you think of yourself as a performer?

Not everyone who plays the piano feels comfortable with that word.

You may play only for yourself, for family now and then, or avoid playing for others altogether – but the moment your music is heard by someone else can bring up all sorts of thoughts and feelings.

We’re starting a new conversation about that with a short survey. Whether you perform regularly, rarely, or not at all, we’d love to hear from you!

It should be obvious to everyone who takes piano lessons that the lesson itself is only a part of what's involved in building yourself up as a pianist. Progress depends to a very large extent on what you do between lessons. Half-hearted, occasional practice is clearly not going to have the same…

When I was a postgraduate student at the Manhattan School of Music in New York back in the 1980s, I decided to make up some credits for my master’s degree by taking courses in Dalcroze Eurythmics. Fortunately for me the teacher of these courses, Dr. Robert Abramson, was one of…

I get quite a lot of inspiration for topics to write about on my blog from my students. During a lesson something might crop up that seems important, or certainly worth writing about. On two separate occasions this week people had been attempting to solve what they perceived as technical…

Leaps of Faith: On Practising Waltzes

Waltzes demand a fair amount of left hand agility from the pianist - all that hopping back and forth can be quite dizzying. A pre-requisite for mobility across the keyboard is physical ease and looseness, we simply won't be able to manage waltz accompaniments if we are in any way…
